
“They can engage the employers,” he said. “Our government’s mission is to fill the skills gap by better connecting Ontario students to these good-paying jobs.”Īlthough the event at Crossley was planned before the government announcement, Mike Marquis, the co-operative education and SHSM program leader at Crossley, said the Trades and Tech Fest had the same goal - to connect students to possible careers by having an opportunity to speak with employers directly. “We are accelerating pathways from high school to apprenticeship learning and ultimately, a career in the skilled trades,” he said. In a news release, Education Minister Stephen Lecce said it will help students interested in a career in the skilled trades get there faster. Once completed, young workers will then be able to apply for their high school diploma. He said he’s aware a provincial initiative that will allow students like him to enter a full-time apprenticeship program in Grade 11. “I figured it's better than a university,” he said, after speaking with a representative of Alectra Utilities at the Trades and Tech Fest that was held recently at the Pelham high school. Entering an apprenticeship is what is in his future.

He would be continuing a family tradition as both his father and uncle - both of whom have retired - were in the trade.
